Sensor Fusion Techniques for Glass Detection and Recognition

Overview

According to the Hong Kong Smart City Blueprint 2.0 released by HKSAR Government in 2020, robotics has been heavily involved and one of the very important factors for Smart City. Nowadays, robot navigation mainly replies on vision and/or laser technologies, both of them are not good enough to detect glass and mirrors because the light is directed to unwanted directions. This makes it difficult to deploy robots in glassy places like shopping malls etc. Instead, milli-meter wave (mm-wave) radars emit and receive electromagnetic wave and calculate the spatial information using signals' time-of-flight. Glass and mirrors are good electromagnetic wave reflectors, thus mm-wave radars can provide a reliable glass detection and aid the robot navigation. In this project, we will research on sensor fusion and related artificial intelligence technologies for robot navigation applications in glassy environments. Fusing other sensors with mm-wave radar, the reliability of the robots can be greatly improved. This is an essential and important step to robot deployment for a Smart Hong Kong.
