Assistive Technologies for Traditional Chinese Medicine Tele-Practice

Print

Overview

According to the policy on Chinese medicine by the government of the HKSAR, research on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) technology is being promoted. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, tele-practice has been heavily promoted. However, TCM tele-practice is not fully implemented because palpation is required in TCM and is difficult via stand-alone video conferencing technology. To fill the gap in TCM tele-practice, assistive technologies for both Chinese medicine practitioners and patients have been proposed. Suitable positions and pressure levels are critical in TCM palpation. Therefore, a novel radial artery viewing device is proposed to indicate the suitable acupoints, and a dynamic force control mechanism is incorporated to provide the required pressure levels. The potential outcomes of this project for society include easy access to TCM services for people with mobility issues and the elderly in remote areas, while also continuous and high-quality TCM services for more Hong Kong citizens.
